Sometimes people will set up their webcams, unknowingly allowing all the world complete access to them.

Google will crawl & index these webcams, and they can be found by using a fairly straightforward Google search:

inurl:mjpgmain.asp

Click this link if you’re lazy: unsecured webcams

Here are some examples:
Mr Cyles bike shop
Somewhere in Russia (possibly)
Some kind of animal in a box

These webcams could easily be blocked from Google by including them in your robots.txt file, and it’s usually best practice to put a password on your webcam if you don’t want other people to see it.

There are probably other searches which’ll turn up webcams like this, if you know any, leave a comment below and I’ll add them to this post.

EDIT: I noticed that Boing boing made a similar post in 2005 with the following Google search:

inurl:”ViewerFrame?Mode=”

Turns up a few gooduns!

I bought an HTC HD2 on contract with O2 at the beginning of this year, it seemed like the most badass phone on the market at the time so I thought it would be worth forking out for it.

It turns out I was right! I’ve been incredibly happy with the phone from day one, despite all it’s bugs and glitches (Windows Mobile 6.5 is not the best mobile OS). The only problem with it is the appstore. I’ve heard atrocious things about the Windows appstore, in fact what I heard was so bad I didn’t even bother with it. Instead I scoured the net looking for any bits of software I thought might be useful, here are just a few:

FPSEce – This is a Playstation One emulator for anything running windows mobile / windows CE. Some games work better than others, but frankly, I think it’s amazing. All the hardware functions of the original PS1 are emulated through software, and the HD2 does a really good job of running it. Do a quick youtube search for “HTC HD2 FPSECE” and you’ll see what I mean.

TCPMP – Another invaluable program, it’ll play just about any video/audio file you throw at it – think VLC but in the palm of your hand. Now taken over by Coreplayer, but from what I’ve heard TCPMP does the same job.

Resco File Explorer – Much more functional than the bundled file explorer, it even has a very workable ftp client.

By far the best resource I’ve found for software/updates for the HD2 are on the forums at xda-developers.com. Some amazing stuff goes on there.

Amazing stuff like…

Ubuntu and Android ROMs for the HTC HD2

When I found out about these I had to try them out. The Android ROM only works with the newest radio ROM, so I had to flash my radio ROM from 2.04 to 2.10 – something I was not a little afraid of, I didn’t want rather an expensive brick where my phone used to be. The update worked fine, and Android seems to work ok-ish at the moment (it’s actually more buggy than winmo and a lot of functions don’t work…and it crashes after a couple of minutes) you can follow the progress of the Dev team at the HTC LINUX site or on the XDA-developers forum.

Here’s a pic of the radio ROM getting an update (those who are squeamish about expensive bricks look away now) :

Android running on my HD2:

The Pièce de résistance, Ubuntu running oh so very smoothly on my HD2:

Fantastic work by the HTC Linux team, amazing stuff!

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an old machine I had lying around, the aim was to use it as a media PC. The machine is very very old and with Ubuntu it boots up in about 30 seconds compared to the 30 minutes windows XP used to take. I don’t know the specs of the PC, it has a pentium 4 I think, and maybe 256mb of RAM.

I had a problem trying to get the display to work on my LCD tv, an LG 32LG3000, the graphics card I was using was an Nvidia Geforce 6600, using the VGA output. I couldn’t get the resolution above 640×480, I spent a while looking for a solution on the internet but couldn’t find one which worked. The closest I got was with Ubuntu’s wiki page, but using their ‘cvt’ or ‘gtf’ utility got me the error “could not set the configuration for crtc 58″, or something similar.

Eventually I found the right solution for me, the answer was to edit the xorg.conf file manually and add the screen resolution in there. The steps to do that are below:

1. Backup your xorg.conf file. Just in case anything goes wrong! Use this code:

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup

2. Find the modeline and the ‘horizsync’ and ‘vertrefresh’ numbers for your screen. I found mine through mythtv’s Modeline Database, but I expect a Google search will be able to find you yours if it’s not on there or in your screen’s manual.

3. Add the above info to your xorg.conf file. Use the following code to edit your xorg.conf, add the modline, ‘horizsync’ and ‘vertrefresh’ numbers under the ‘Monitor’ section:

gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

For example, here’s what my xorg.conf used to look like:

And here’s what it looks like now:

I also added the following line, I don’t know if it’s needed but it seems to work:

Option “Preferred mode” “1360×768″

4. Open your monitor settings and change the resolution (hopefully). Go to System -> Preferences -> Monitor. For this to work you need to use the Nvidia control panel, the options for different resolutions for your screen should now be listed, and should hopefully work.

It was a pain in the a** trying to get this to work so I hope it’s of some use to someone else! By the way, the media PC idea didn’t work out, the computer just wasn’t powerful enough, it couldn’t handle mkv files, the sound wouldn’t work properly, and the PC itself was just noisy as hell. Worst media PC ever.

We all use Open Site Explorer, if you’re like me you’ll use it a lot, it’s a great tool, very functional. To make things easier, and because I’m so lazy, I’ve been working on a bookmarklet to open the current page in OSE with one click.

Mediaworks have this great post with two versions. Both open the DOMAIN of the current page in OSE, either in the same window or a new tab.

I needed more functionality than that, I wanted a bookmarklet which would open the current PAGE in OSE, in a new tab, showing only 301′d and followed links from outside the current domain.

So here it is:

301 & followed OSE

Click and drag the link to your bookmark bar. This is my first foray into javascript, so it’s possible (likely) that it’s not very stable but it’s been working fine for me since I made it (a whole half day). If you can think of any other configurations which might be useful let me know and I’ll add them to the post. Otherwise feel free to take the code and use it as you will.
